The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre in Burnham-on-Sea is owned and managed by the Town Council.
The theatre is located centrally in Princess Street and is a fabulous venue for a diverse range of performances from tribute bands, festivals and musicals to ballets, concerts and history shows.
The building was taken over from Sedgemoor District Council in 2011 for the princely sum of £1! Since then the Town Council has invested in improving the facilities and creating a wonderful space to host these great shows in the 200 seat auditorium. When the seating is retracted the floor space can be used by community groups for all kinds of events and activities: bingo, kurling, etc. The blood donors also use this area on a regular basis as well as Sedgemoor District Council who provide weekly advice sessions for residents at this convenient location.
The cosy café is very reasonably priced and is always busy with local people and visitors socialising with friends and enjoying the art by local artists exhibited on the walls which is also for sale. This arts lounge area doubles up as a bar in the evenings to provide drinks for shows both before and during the interval.
The Town Council employs 2 full time staff to manage the building and is fortunate to have an experienced team of 30 volunteers who help in the café/bar, selling tickets and ushering events, and it really wouldn’t be possible to keep the Princess going without their friendly support.
The town is extremely fond of this very valuable community asset, and there are plans to refurbish and modernise the whole building in 2019 with grant funding.
